What to Wear Working Out (Gym & HIIT) at 20°F: Activity-Specific Layering Guide
Dressing for working out at 20°F is not the same as dressing for standing around at 20°F. Working Out (Gym & HIIT) generates roughly 18°F of metabolic heat, so your effective dressing temperature is closer to 38°F. Overdressing means stopping mid-session to shed layers; underdressing means a cold start that costs the first ten minutes. This guide solves both.
THE METABOLIC ADJUSTMENT
Working Out (Gym & HIIT) at 20°F is, for clothing purposes, working out (gym & hiit) at roughly 38°F. Working Out (Gym & HIIT) burns enough calories to add a steady ~18°F to your skin temperature within ten minutes of starting. Dressing for the air temperature alone means you start comfortable and finish soaked — which becomes dangerous if you stop moving in cold weather.
BASE LAYER
Midweight merino or technical synthetic long-sleeve, fitted enough to wick close to skin. Sweat rate for working out (gym & hiit) sits at the high (interval-driven) end of the spectrum, which makes fabric choice non-negotiable: lightweight synthetics or merino tees, breathable shorts or joggers.
MID LAYER
Lightweight fleece or synthetic insulated vest. Vest keeps the core warm without overheating the arms.
OUTER LAYER
Wind-resistant jacket or vest. Front-panel wind blocking with breathable back panels is the technical-apparel sweet spot.
ACCESSORIES
• Beanie or ear band
• Insulated gloves
• Wool or wool-blend socks
• A lightweight layer for warmup and cool-down. Sweatband or visor for HIIT. Indoor gyms run 65-72°F regardless of outdoor temp.
THE TEN-MINUTE TEST
Walk out the door slightly cold. If you are comfortable in the first ten minutes, you are overdressed for the next sixty. This is the classic rule for any high-output activity and it is especially important for working out between 25°F and 55°F, where the gap between "starting cold" and "ending cold" is the largest.
WHEN TO ESCALATE
If the wind is sustained above 15 mph, add one wind-blocking layer over what is recommended above. If precipitation is in the forecast, swap the outer shell for a waterproof-breathable layer. If the route is exposed (open fields, ridges, water), assume conditions are 5-10°F colder than reported and dress accordingly.
